Disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried donated to Kansas Democratic Party – The Topeka Capital-Journal

The Kansas Democratic Party was a recipient earlier this year of a contribution from Sam Bankman-Fried, the now-indicted former head of cryptocurrency giant FTX, campaign finance records show.
Bankman-Fried was a prolific donor to political causes, generally supporting Democrats, a habit that has increasingly come under scrutiny following the demise of his former companies. The Washington Post reported he gave $40 million to political campaigns in the most recent election cycle.
That included a $10,000 donation to KDP on Aug. 31, 2022, Federal Elections Commission records show, the only donation with apparent Kansas connections in the most recent election cycle.
A spokesperson for the KDP did not immediately respond as to what the party did with the money and whether it has been donated or returned in recent days.
Other candidates have taken either of those two routes in recent weeks. Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic challenger to Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, for instance, returned a $1 million check from Bankman-Fried, while Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, donated her $14,000 donation to a writers’ retreat for women in the Aleutian Mountains.
FTX, an international cryptocurrency exchange, and its affiliates filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 11 in one of the most high-profile casualties of the nascent cryptocurrency industry.
FTX’s sudden collapse has impacted Kansas in at least one other way, after the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System reported a relatively modest loss of $187,400 after investing in FTX and its affiliated companies.

The companies’ sudden collapse came after a series of concerns about its conduct, prompting a rush of consumers seeking to withdraw their assets. It is uncertain whether creditors will ultimate be paid.
Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas last week, shortly before he was indicted on eight counts in U.S. court, including wire fraud and conspiracy by misusing customer funds.
The Securities and Exchange Commission has said Bankman-Fried “orchestrated a years-long fraud” to divert funds from FTX to Alameda Research, another trading firm he ran.
